J. Willard Marriott-11th Cousin

Family History Research
Repinski-Dietz Family

J. Willard Marriott
Founder of Marriott Hotels
11th Cousin

While researching some of the lines that branch out from my Dietz family line through my mother, Marlene Dietz Repinski, I discovered that the founder of the company that I work for was my 11th Cousin!! This is one of the more neat discoveries that I have made in the past couple months.

Meet J. Willard Marriott, the man who created the world's biggest Hotel Empire. The company that I have worked for since 1999.

Introduction

John Willard Marriott, Sr. (September 17, 1900 – August 13, 1985) was an American entrepreneur and businessman.
He was the founder of the Marriott Corporation (which became Marriott International in 1993), the parent company of one of the world's largest hospitality, hotel chains, and food services companies.

The Marriott company rose from a small root beer stand in Washington, D.C. in 1927 to a chain of family restaurants by 1932, to its first motel in 1957.

By the time he died, the Marriott company operated 1,400 restaurants and 143 hotels and resorts worldwide, including two theme parks, earned USD $4.5 billion in revenue annually with 154,600 employees. The company's interests even extended to a line of cruise ships.

Marriott Hotels is now the world's largest Hotel and Hospitality.

My Family Line & J.W.'s Family Line

Our Common Ancestors

The two common ancestors of J.W. and myself are Robert Clarke (born 1513) and Margaret Bliss (born 1517) who were my 13th Great Grandparents and who would have been J.W.'s 10th Great Grandparents.
They lived in Courteenhall, Northampton, England.

My 12th Great Grandfather, Edward Clarke (born 1540) and Katherine Clarke Marriott (born 1547) were brother and sister. They were two of six children of Robert and Margaret.

I have not been able to research their lives as of yet.
Who knows what else I will find when I have the time to do so.....

Early life

Marriott was born at Marriott Settlement (present day Marriott-Slaterville, Utah), the second of eight children of Hyrum Willard Marriott and Ellen Morris Marriott.

As a child, "Bill", as J. Willard was called, helped to raise sugar beets and sheep on his family's farm. At age 13, Marriott raised lettuce on several fallow acres on the farm and the harvest at summer's end brought $2,000, which Marriott gave to his father. The next year, Hyrum entrusted Marriott, his eldest son, with the sale of a herd of 3,000 sheep, sending him and the sheep unescorted by rail to San Francisco.

At the age of 19 and as a devout Latter Day-Saint, he undertook the traditional missionary work of the church for two years, being assigned to New England.

On his way home after completing his mission, he passed through Washington, D.C. during the sweltering summer months of 1921. While there:

"... [H]e walked from Capitol Hill to the Washington Monument, toiled up the steps to the top, walked back down again, and strolled over to the Lincoln Memorial. Everywhere he went tourists and pedestrians sweltered and sweated in the sultry, humid air. On the way back to his hotel, he just stood there in the street watching the crowds, he couldn't get over it: a push cart peddler would come along the street selling lemonade and soda pop and ice cream, and in minutes he would be cleaned out and on his way to stock up with another cartload".

Marriott graduated from Weber State University, here he served as student body president, with an associate degree in June 1923 and from the University of Utah, where he affiliated with Phi Delta Theta, with a bachelor's degree in June 1926.

After Marriott earned his bachelor's degree, the president of Weber, Aaron Tracy, who had assisted Marriott to enroll there by helping him make up secondary education credits missed due to the Marriott family's ranching efforts, employed him at the school in Ogden.

Marriott soon felt the urge, however, to be his own boss. He heard about a cousin's A&W Root Beer franchise and, remembering his experience seeing so many people suffer through the brutal summer heat of Washington, D.C., he decided to look into a venture there.

Business career

In 1927, he secured from A&W Root Beer the franchise rights for Washington, D.C.; Baltimore, Maryland; and Richmond, Virginia; he then moved to Washington to open a nine-stool root beer stand there with his business partner, Hugh Colton.

They opened on May 20, 1927 at 3128 14th Street, NW. He returned to Utah two weeks later, and married Alice Sheets on 9 June 1927. With the approach of cooler Autumn months, and with the addition of Mexican food items to the menu, the stand became The Hot Shoppe, a popular family restaurant.

In 1928, he opened the first drive-in east of the Mississippi, and the business was incorporated as Hot Shoppes, Inc. in Delaware in 1929. During the Second World War, the business expanded to include the management of food services in defense plants and government buildings, such as the U.S. Treasury.

Marriott's restaurant chain grew, and the company went public in 1953. In 1957, he expanded his business to hotels, opening the first Marriott hotel—actually a motel, the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel in Arlington, Virginia.

The company became Marriott, Inc. in 1967. Two large chains were added to the group, the Big Boy family restaurants in 1967 and Roy Rogers Family Restaurants in 1968.

Over the years, Marriott's company interests expanded. Continuing with food services, Marriott eventually invented airline in-flight food service. This segment of their enterprise continues to be a large part of their business, providing food services to many major airlines. Marriott also provides food services to many colleges, elementary schools and other venues.

Marriott was an energetic worker and rarely rested, preferring to run his company. Many attested to the fact that he ate, lived, breathed and dreamed about how to run and improve his company:

"His managers never knew what time of day or night he’d show up at the kitchen door and go bird-dogging almost at a half-run through the kitchen, the pantries, the storage rooms, the refrigerators, the restaurant itself, running a finger over the shelves to check for dust, checking under tables and in cutlery drawers, checking the ranges, the storage rooms, the trays about to be served, sampling the root beer, and raising hell if everything wasn’t spotless, neat, clean, bright, polished, done efficiently, done well."
Even after the company grew to include hundreds of restaurants and hotels, Marriott vowed to personally inspect every establishment at least four times a year.

Marriott tempered his rigid demands for perfection with devotion to his employees. According to his son, Bill Jr.,:

"In establishing the culture of the company, there was a lot of attention and tender loving care paid to the hourly workers. When they were sick, he went to see them. When they were in trouble, he got them out of trouble. He created a family loyalty."
According to Marriott himself (from a videotaped segment):

"You’ve got to make your employees happy. If the employees are happy, they are going to make the customers happy."
Marriott's wife, Alice Sheets, was actively involved in the business, starting as the bookkeeper at the root-beer stand. Despite the demands of the company, she felt her role as a mother to her two sons was her most important calling and balanced the demands of both of her endeavors.

Marriott and his wife had two sons. Their son Bill Marriott, Jr. is currently Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Marriott International. The other son is Richard Marriott, Chairman of the board for Host Hotels & Resorts, formerly Host Marriott Corporation.

Business colleagues

J. Willard Marriott maintained extensive business connections with his Mormon heritage. A prominent associate was Michigan Governor George W. Romney, father of Willard Mitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts and the GOP candidate for president of the United States in 2012. The family friendship is trans-generational as evidenced by Bill Marriott donating $1 million personally to Restore Our Future, a Romney PAC. Mitt Romney's first name is Willard, after John Willard Marriott.

Marriott was for many years in the late 1940s and 1950s president of the LDS Church's Washington Stake headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Legacy

Marriott Center

J. Willard Marriott Library

Marriott Allied Health Building at Weber State University
Marriott's legacy continues today through the continuance of the company he founded and through his community involvement and philanthropy. Marriott was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and sought to share the church's teachings with others by placing a copy of the Book of Mormon in each hotel room, alongside a copy of a Gideon Bible—a tradition that has endured. He also donated funds to the church's flagship tertiary educational institution, Brigham Young University, resulting in the naming of the university's 19000-seat multi-purpose arena (Marriott Center) in his honor. While serving as home to the BYU Cougars men's and women's college basketball teams, the center also hosts various cultural events and religious devotionals. Also at BYU, the university's business school, the Marriott School of Management, is named in honor of Marriott. On the campuses of Marriott's alma maters stands the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah and the Marriott Allied Health Building at Weber State University which houses the Dumke College of Heath Professions.

Personal life

In 1935, Marriott was diagnosed with lymphoma and given between six months to a year to live. However, he survived to live until 1985.

Marriott was, for many years in the late 1940s and 1950s, president of the LDS Church's Washington Stake headquartered in Washington, D.C.

End Notes

I never got the chance to meet my 11th cousin but I did meet his son Bill Marriott a few years ago.

I am honored to share blood with this man who's company I have worked at for close to 20 years.
This company has been a very large part of my life for many years and I can't think of a time that the word "Marriott" has not been part of my daily life.

Almira Swart Deitz-3rd Great Grandmother

Family Tree History & Research
Deitz Family Tree
Swart Branch

Today, September 23rd, 2018 is the birthday of my 3rd Great Grandmother.
She would have been 187 years old.

Her story is one that I do not know very much about and though I have only begun researching that branch of my mother's tree, the following is what I have been able to discover:

John Whipple & John Whipple

Family History Research

Today I bring my family and friends the story of John Whipple, one of my 10th Great Grandfathers, who made me and my siblings and their children possible.
When I began my research into my family history many years ago, I never imagined I would find so many ancestors with so much history written about them.

How many 10th Great Grandparents does one have?
Quite a few.....to be exact, a person has 4096 10th Great Grandparents and a total of 8190 Ancestors. 4096 10th Great Grandparents + 4094 ancestors before those ancestors = 8190 total people that have contributed to your essence and your being made possible.

Of course, the above numbers assume that none of the parties were related.
The number will be reduced when cousins marry since they will have common ancestors and my family does:

  • For instance, my 9th Great Grandfather, Thomas Pope is my 9th Great twice over and he is also my 10th Great one time as I am descended from him via three of his children.
  • In my research I have found this to happen a few times over already:
    • Another example being my Smith family line from Rhode Island where my 8th Great Grandparents, Joseph Smith & Patience Mowry had two sons named Jacob & Joseph.
      •  Brother's Jacob and Joseph's lines would join together in two of their great grandchildren marrying each other.
      • Jacob's line:
        • Jacob Smith/Dinah Harris
          • Jeremiah Smith/Lavina Olney
            • Israel Smith/ Amy Phillips
              • Martin H Smith/ Mary E Smith
      • Jospeh's line:
        • Joseph Smith/Lydia Dexter**
          • Simon Smith/ Elizabeth Sayles
            • Ziba Smith/ Lydia Waterman
              • Mary E Smith/ Martin H Smith
        • Martin Hubbard Smith being the great grandson of Jacob
        •  Mary Elizabeth Smith being the great granddaughter of Joseph.
        • Martin Hubbard Smith would marry his 3rd Cousin Mary Elizabeth Smith.
        • They would have a child named Mary Elizabeth
          • Mary Elizabeth Smith would marry Chester Brown.
          • The above two people would be my 3rd Great Grandparents.

**It is this 7th Great Grandmother, Lydia Dexter Smith, who is my ancestor that will take me back to my 10th Great Grandfather, John Whipple, who this story is about.

While trying to find out more about my John Whipple, I came across two men of the same name and who both came over from Bocking England and who both settled in New England around the same time in the early 1600s.

One of them was my 10th Great Grandfather and one wasn't.
To make matters worse, it seems that some historians and genealogists and more than a few family trees have the two either mixed up or even combined.
Both of these John Whipple's made names for themselves in Colonial New England and both had large families and thus many descendants....

Trying to unravel the two John's took the better part of an entire week but I did it!

Not only did I discover which John was my 10th Great Grandfather, but while researching the Whipple lines I discovered an amazing reconstruction of his life from the moment he immigrated to America to the day he died.
An even more surprising find was that some of my other ancestral great grandparents from Rhode Island that are in my Tree such as my 10th great grandparents, Richard Scott & Katherine (Marbury) Scott and my 10th great grandparents, Roger and Mary (Barnard) Williams were intimately connected to my John Whipple and that these families all intermarried with one another and through all of those marriages eventually came my mother and thus myself and my siblings and their children.

So below are the two John Whipple's of Colonial New England and their stories. I would be proud to be a descendant of either of these fine men. Guess which one is mine??!!

So come with me and learn a bit about another of my 10 Great Grandfathers and his time spent on this earth. This post is dedicated to all of my Whipple ancestors and the progeny that came afterwards because of him. Rest in peace Grandpa.

The two earliest American immigrants named John Whipple are misidentified in a large number of online databases. In fact, many databases have merged them into a composite John Whipple, with a variety of spouses and a large number of children. We mention them here, in hopes of clearing up the confusion.

"Elder" John (1596-1669)

Died in Ipswich, Massachusetts
Born in Bocking, England in 1596.
Son of Matthew "The Elder" Whipple, a clothier in Bocking, Essex, England and Joan Whipple
Immigrated to Ipswich, Mass., with brother Matthew in 1638. Ship unknown
Married Susanna Clark.
All Ipswich, Mass., Whipple's descend from this John and his brother Matthew.

"Captain" John (abt. 1617-1685)

Died in Providence, Rhode Island
Born in Milford, Pembrokeshire, Wales in 1617.
Son of Mathew Whipple of Bradford-St. Bowling, Essex, England and Joannah Whipple
Immigrated aboard the Lyon to Dorchester, Mass., in 1632 As a teen-age indentured servant.
Married Sarah Hutchinson
Then in 1658 moved with her and children to Providence, R.I., where additional children were born.
All Rhode Island Whipple's descend from this John.
The earliest known Providence, R.I., Whipple.
Earliest Whipple settler in the New World.

The Battle of Cameron Dam Revisited

Family History and Research

As a child growing up, I heard from my mother and my grandparents, the story of how one of my great uncles on my mother's side of her father's family gained fame in the early 1900s by being involved in a Northwoods shootout with a big logging company on their family farm.
A story that was talked about nationally at the time it happened and even appeared in the New York Times and years later the story of what happened was written by a man named Malcom Rosholt.
My mom bought me a copy of the book titled "The Battle of Cameron Dam" on my 12th birthday and it has been one of my most treasured books I have ever owned.

One of my most treasured family heirlooms

While researching my Dietz family tree this morning, I came across a few photos that are housed at the Wisconsin Historical Society depicting the incident.

The family in front of their cabin

Come along as I share an abridged version of the story of John Dietz, my famous Great uncle, and his time in the spotlight in the lumberjack era of the untamed wilds of Northern Wisconsin.
Historical Highway Marker a few miles from the Homestead
My 3rd Great Uncle John F Dietz brandishing a Pistol in Front of his Cabin

In 1904, John F. Dietz and his family purchased a farmstead on the Thornapple River about 8 miles southeast of the Village of Winter. Dietz soon discovered that the Cameron Dam, one of the many logging dams on this important tributary of the Chippewa River, lay on his property. He thereupon claimed that the Chippewa Lumber 7 Boom Company, a Weyerhauser affiliate, owed him a toll for logs driven downstream. For four years he refused to permit logs to be sluiced down the Thornapple, defending “his” dam at gunpoint and successfully resisting attempts to arrest him. At least one deputy and two of Dietz’ children were wounded in confrontations. In becoming an outlaw, Dietz also became a folk hero with a nationwide following. In October 1910, a large sheriff’s posse surrounded his house. In the ensuing gun battle, Oscar Harp, a deputy, was killed.

John Dietz surrendered and was sentenced to life in prison. He served ten years, but public pressure eventually convinced Governor John J. Blain to pardon him in May 1921. Dietz died in 1924. Cameron Dam has long since disappeared. Several books and even a play have been written about the Battle of Cameron Dam.

A Few Stories of Knights & Warriors & Chivalric Ancestors

As I continue my research into the old Family Tree, I came upon a few more interesting ancestral kin who made names for themselves in the annals of history. Come along on my latest journey into my mother's family lines and my recent discoveries.

Robert Guiscard

Robert Guiscard (1015 – 1085), widely known as the Wily or the Weasel, was a Norman knight who settled in southern Italy about 1047. After a series of adventures, he made himself Duke of Apulia in 1059, and transformed southern Italy into a Norman domain by extending his rule over Calabria, Naples, and Sicily, laying the foundations for the Kingdom of Sicily.

What...Do You Think Your A Saint or Something??

Family Tree History And Research
Feb 19h, 2018

WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE?

"What...Do You Think Your A Saint Or Something??

As I was growing up, I remember our mom used to ask me this question when I denied doing something wrong....even though she (and everyone else) knew I did do something I wasn't supposed to....

What is a Saint?

According to this definition in Wikipedia:
A saint (also historically known as a hallow) is a person who is recognized as having an exceptional degree of holiness or likeness or closeness to God.Depending on the context and denomination, the term also retains its original Christian meaning, as any believer who is "in Christ" and in whom Christ dwells, whether in Heaven or on Earth. In AnglicanRoman CatholicEastern OrthodoxLutheran, and Oriental Orthodox doctrine, all of their faithful deceased in Heaven are considered to be saints, but some are considered worthy of greater honor or emulation;official ecclesiastical recognition, and consequently veneration, is given to some saints through the process of canonization in the Catholic Church or glorification in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

While I am not a "Saint" or even close to it, I have made a few family discoveries in the past few months that have my mother and myself and my siblings and their children the descendants of a few of these folks.

I cried when I discovered one of my ancestral Great Grandmother's was "grouped" in this realm of human beings.
So much so that even as I write this post, my brain is having a very difficult time grasping this find. To think that a person who is venerated by scores of people to this very day and that I share her blood, is probably one of the most profound things that I have discovered while researching my family's ancestral roots and history.

A few days ago, on another lark I decided to query some of the other saints through history and though I am still doing some pretty in depth research, I can now proudly say that I and my siblings and their children, through our mother, Marlene Grace Dietz Repinski, descend from some very neat people from history who were canonized as Saints in one of the many world faiths.

Today I would like to introduce everyone to the first of these "Saints".

An Amazing Discovery! The Father of Texas is my Cousin!

Family Tree History and Research
Monday, Feb 5th, 2018

As I was researching my family tree just now I stumbled upon and discovered a 14th Great Grandfather through my mother's family line from her father (my grandfather) Ray Dietz, named Stephen Austin, who was born in 1484 in Kent England.

On a lark I decided to research the ancestry of the namesake of Austin Texas to see if my ancestral great grandfather was somehow connected to the "Founder of Texas"......

John Jenney-My 10th Great Grandfather

Family Tree History and Research

My first discovery of a New England Ancestor from my mother's family line that I discovered about a year and a half ago while researching my great grandmother's family history.

Little did I know that making this discovery the August before last that I would be starting an amazing foray into the history of our world and that this marvelous journey through history would enable me to discover numerous ancestral great grandparents and aunts and uncles that came to America on ships such as the Mayflower and the Fortune and the Anne and the Little James and ships that sailed in the "Great Migration" of the Winthrop Fleet and more.

I would find Ancestors that would settle Colonial America and become the founders The United States of America.

I would then find Ancestors that would lead me back across the ocean to England and mainland Europe and beyond.

I would find Ancestors that have given me noble and royal ancestors that in my wildest dreams I never imagined would be possible, but the pedigrees are all there written down.

I would also find through these Ancestors that humanity is ONE BIG FAMILY and that we are all related to one another in one way or another.

John Jenney-My 10th Great Grandfather

Today I would like to introduce everyone to my 10th Great Grandparents and my 9th Great grandmother who I descend from through my mother and through her grandmother on her father's side of her family.

When I first discovered my line to him, all I knew was the following (I penned this paragraph in my journal back in Sep of 2016):
That I accidentally discovered a direct line of descent from one of my great grandmothers to a family that helped settle Plymouth Mass., though they did not arrive on the Mayflower is unbelievable!

So it is that My 10th great grandparents, John and Sarah Jenney sailed a few years (1623) after on a ship called “The Little James”.
They were part of the group that went to Leiden Holland in the early 1600s with William Brewster and the other pilgrims but for some reason they decided not to embark on the Mayflower and instead waited until 1623 to make the journey to New England. Once they arrived in Plymouth, they quickly became an important part of the new colony by erecting the 1st successful “Grist Mill” for grinding corn into mill and flour.

John also created the 1st salt works for the colony and was part of the early governing council. Family records indicate that they were close friends of William Bradford and Miles Standish among others.

Alice of Saluzzo, Countess of Arundel
23rd Great Grandmother
1269-1292

Another new discovery today.
And another noble ancestral Great Grandmother!
Through my mother's (Marlene Grace Dietz Repinski) family line comes a young lady who only lived for 23 years but it must have been a pretty awesome 23 years.
She comes from a very old Italian family line and married into a noble English line which would give her many descendants that would help shape the history of our world.

This line descends to my mother and my siblings and their children through her grandmother (our great grandmother), Grace Pope Dietz. From Grace's line, this branch would go back through her fathers Pope family line to my 5th great grandmother, Ruth Hammond Pope and through her mother, Sarah Holmes Hammond's line to her Clark family line and then the Strong family line (which I have not had a chance to research yet).
Eventually this line would lead back to the noble English Leigh and Strafford families to the Goushill and then finally the FitzAlan noble lines.
In this line would be knights and ladies, a Lord Mayor of London and other historic figures of English history.

Alice (or Alecia) Saluzzo FitzAlan is the 1st ancestor of Italian heritage I have discovered.

Shall we get to know this woman, who though she only lived a short 23 years, left descendants including me and my siblings and the Dukes of Norfolk, the English Queen Consorts of Henry the VIII, Winston Churchill, Princes Dianna and the current Royal Family.
