Family Tree History & Research
Deitz Family Tree
Swart Branch
Today, September 23rd, 2018 is the birthday of my 3rd Great Grandmother.
She would have been 187 years old.
Her story is one that I do not know very much about and though I have only begun researching that branch of my mother's tree, the following is what I have been able to discover:
Almira Swart Deitz
(3rd Great Grandmother)
My 3rd Great Grandmother's family history is intertwined with the history of the Albany-Saratoga Springs area of New York state and more specifically the Mohawk-Hudson Valley.....
When Almira Swart was born on September 23, 1831, in Saratoga Springs, New York, her father, Wilhelm, was 41, and her mother, Margaret, was 26.
She married John F Deitz on December 17, 1851, in Schoharie, New York.
They had four children during their marriage.
She died on April 20, 1891, at the age of 59, and was buried in Cameron, Wisconsin.

The emigration path of my 3rd Great Grandparents
Birth & Family History
My 3rd Great Grandmother, Almira Swart, was born on September 23, 1831, in Saratoga Springs, New York, to Wilhelm M. Swart, age 41 and Margaret Polly Vrooman, age 26,
Through some research I have discovered that both of her parent's families lines came from an area of upstate New York called the "Hudson-Mohawk Valley".
There is much information written about the history of the valley and in particular her families history in Schoharie, Schenectady New York which goes back to the settling of the area another 6 generations before her.
One site in particular where I discovered a lot of history on the Swart line;
My ancestral 11th Great Grandfather who immigrated from Europe was a man named Cornelijs Jansz Swart who lived from 1598-1644 in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands
His two sons were the early settlers of Schenectady;
1.Frederick Cornelise, who was proposed by Secretary Ludovicus Cobes in 1676 as one of the magistrates of the village.
2.Teunise Cornelise Swart, from whom all the families in the Schenectady section are descended.
I descend in this line from Teunise who was my 10th Great Grandfather.
The family has always been prominent in the Mohawk Valley.
As a family they have been wealthy and influential.
My 10th Great Grandfather, Teunise Cornelise Swart was one of the original proprietors of Schenectady, and received allotment No. 10 on the "Groote Vlachte" (great flat), and a village lot on the east corner of State and Church street.
He married Elizabeth Van der Linde.
His widow married Jacob Meese Vrooman, who was killed in the massacre of 1690.
Jacob is an ancestral relative as well through one of my later grandparents in this line.
She married (third) Wouter Wythoff, of Albany.
Teunise also owned a tavern which is still standing and this website tells a bit of the history of it and the family and the area they called home.
My Pedigree from my 10th Great Grandfather
1. John is the son of Marlene Grace (Dietz) Repinski
2. Marlene is the daughter of Raymond Harold Dietz
3. Raymond is the son of Henry Chester Dietz
4. Henry is the son of Henry Dietz
5. Henry is the son of Almira (Swart) Deitz-Dietz
6. Almira is the daughter of Wilhelmus M. Swart
7. William is the son of Laurents Swart
8. Laurents is the son of Poulus Swart
9. Poulus is the son of Laurents Swart
10. Louwerens is the son of Cornelisse Teunise Swart
11. Cornelisse Teunise is the son of Theunis (Corneliszen) Swart
12. Teunis is the son of Cornelius Swart
This makes Cornelius the tenth great grandfather of John.
It seems that my Swart Family relatives are all very alive and well with quite a few living in New York state with a large contingent in this area:
Marriage & Children
Almira Swart married John F Deitz in Middleburg, Schoharie, New York, on December 17, 1851, when she was 20 years old. They emigrated to Wisconsin prior to 1859m as Charles was born in Wisconsin in 1859.
Almira and John would have four sons:
William Wallace Deitz
1853–1915
*Henry Dietz (My 2nd Great Grandfather)
1854–1937
Charles Dietz
1859–
John F Deitz
1861–1924
The family first settled in Winnoconne and then moved to the Rice Lake area of Northern Wisconsin in or around 1869 according to family history I have found. The journey reportedly took over a month in a covered wagon.
It was in the wilds of this pioneer Indian frontier that they raised their four sons and would help to grow Rice Lake and thus populate that area with many descendants including my 2nd Great Uncle, John F. Deitz, who would gain fame as "The Defender of Cameron Dam".
The first American flag in this region was made by Almira and one of my great aunts for a Fourth of July celebration at Barron at which Judge Barron spoke.
Death & Burial
Almira Swart died on April 20, 1891, when she was 59 years old.
20 Apr 1891 • Stanley, Barron County, Wisconsin, USA
She is buried in the Deitz family plot in Meadow Creek Cemetery in Cameron, Barron County, Wisconsin.
Happy Birthday Grandma!
