The Man Who lived in Three Centuries
Life Sketch Of Ebenezer Cobb II
Ebenezer Cobb II (22 March 1694 – 8 December 1801) was an American centenarian who may have been the oldest man ever until being surpassed by Pierre Darcourt in 1836.
He may have also been the last man born in the 1600s.
Ebenezer Cobb II was born on 22 March 1694 in Plymouth, Massachusetts
as the oldest of 10 children born to Ebenezer Cobb I and Mercy (née
Holmes) Cobb.
One of his brothers, Nathan, lived to be a nonagenarian.
At the age of 10, in 1704, he recollected witnessing the funeral procession of Peregrine White, the first known person born on board the Mayflower.
Ebenezer was a husbandman. He lived first in Plymouth (because Kingston was not a town at the time of his birth), then in Middleboro and Halifax, but spent the greater part of his life in Kingston, having returned there in 1735 (from Kingston Town Hall Records).
He died in Kingston, Plymouth, Massachusetts on 8 December 1801at the age of 107 years, eight months and six days having lived in three centuries.
He was
buried at the Old Burying Ground in Kingston in the Cobb plot.
On 28 July 1722, Cobb married Ruth Tinkham, and the couple had two children (Ebenezer Cobb III and Ruth Cobb).
Ruth (Cobb’s wife) passed away in 1726 aged 26 shortly after their daughter’s birth. In late 1727, Cobb married again to Lydia Stevens, with whom he fathered eight children.
Lydia passed away in 1745 aged 47, when their youngest daughter was a year old.
On 14 December 1747, Cobb married a third time to Joanna Williamson, who later passed away in 1791 aged 87.
Ebenezer lived in Kingston in the section called Rocky Nook about half a
mile from the seashore. “It was a costly house in its day” says a
descendant of Ebenezer, “with tiles about the fireplaces and some carved
work in the rooms.” This descendant, on a visit to the house, “saw his
easy chair, and an old chest of costly workmanship, with a date of 1686.” He said “it was probably brought there by one of his wives.
"His days were spent cultivating the earth. His mode of living was simple; only twice in his life and then it was to gratify his brethren on the jury, did he substitute an enervating cup of tea in place of the invigorating bowl of broth or nutritive porringer of milk.
He never used
glasses, but for several years could not see to read. He was moderate
of stature, stooping in attitude, having an expandable chest, and a fair
and florid countenance.
"He enjoyed life in his old age, and in his last year declared that he had the same attachment to life as ever."
Ebenezer Cobb II died in Kingston, Massachusetts, USA, on 8 December 1801, at the age of 107 years, 261 days. He had lived in Kingston since 1735, having previously lived in Middleboro and Halifax (Massachusetts).
