Patrick Wayne Swayze-15th Cousin

Growing up in the 1970s, one of my favorite books was "The Outsiders" and I read it with a fervor....and not that many books in my early teen years captured my attention long enough to read them from cover to cover.

A few years in to the future, this book would be made into a movie that would be the start of the career of a young actor by the name of Patrick Swayze.
Years later I would meet him in of all places....my home town and many years after his death, I would discover that we are kinfolk to one another through one of my mom's family lines back to Colonial New England and Great Britain.

Following is a story of my chance encounter back in the 1990's with a pretty cool Hollywood actor, memories of a part of my childhood and the research of a family line that led to the discovery a few yeas ago that this man is also a distant cousin of myself and my siblings through one of our mother's family tree branches.
If I only knew then what I know now.

"The Outsiders"

(From Wikipedia)

The Outsiders is a coming-of-age novel by S. E. Hinton, first published in 1967 by Viking Press. Hinton was 15 when she started writing the novel but did most of the work when she was 16 and a junior in high school. Hinton was 18 when the book was published.

The book details the conflict between two rival gangs divided by their socioeconomic status: the working-class "greasers" and the upper-class "Socs" (pronounced /ˈsoʊʃɪz/—short for Socials). The story is told in first-person perspective by teenaged protagonist Ponyboy Curtis.

The story in the book takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1965, but this is never explicitly stated in the book.

The film adaptation was produced in 1983 when I was a junior in high school, and a little-known short-lived television series appeared in 1990, picking up where the movie left off. A stage adaptation was written by Christopher Sergel and published in 1990.

I think part of the reason I enjoyed the book "The Outsiders"  so much was that I seemed to relate to a few of the characters... as parts of my early teens had a bit of "common ground" with some of the kids depicted in the book.

Memories of my teen years came flooding back after a post on Facebook from a friend earlier this week about a documentary coming out on Patrick called

That post reminded me of him and the character he played in the movie version of "The Outsiders. The post also reminded me of my hometown of Wisconsin Rapids and my chance meeting with Patrick back in the mid 90s.

A few years ago I would discover that Patrick and I are cousins through a few of my mom's family lines as I was tracing her ancestry back to New England and beyond.

Since then I have found a few more lines to him ranging from being a 15th cousin to a 20th cousin of myself and my siblings and 16th to 21st from my nieces and nephews.

Part One

"We Were The Outsiders"

(the late 1970s-early 1980s Wisconsin Rapids Wisconsin)

The friends I hung around with were a very unique group of kids....

Our gang of "ruffians" was what one could call "quintessential" small town Wisconsin.
Middle of the road, not dirt poor and not super rich.... but kind of in between.

Some were from broken families, one or two had lost a parent and were being raised by a single father or mother and there was even one of our friends who was being raised by an aunt who he thought was his mother and knowing an aunt who was really his mother.

Everyone knew everyone and even if they weren't friends, they were acquaintances.
The Rich were friends with the Poor and the people from the West Side of town and the East side of town were supposed to be from different worlds with a river separating the two.....but my circle of friends were from both sides and we inhabited the same world.

In a Paper Mill City of 25,000 people back then, you would think there were unknowns.....not in "The Rapids".
Some of our home lives were similar and some were very different.
But through it all, we had one big thing in common.....growing up in one of the best little cities in central Wisconsin.
The Paper Mill that created a city-The Kraft Division Mill in Wis. Rapids

My memories of my childhood are many but it was my teen years where I met some of the most amazing people who made growing up in that city very memorable.

Just as in the book by S.E. Hinton, there were rival cliques that at times interacted with one another. We didn't quite use the same terms as the book did but we had "the dirt balls" and the "dorks/geeks" and the "preppy kids" and the "jocks".

I interacted with most of these groups but for some reason was more at home with the first group then the second or the third though I had friends in all of the above.

We were often quite board with the small town life and would find ways of entertaining ourselves that the youth of today would not even be able to comprehend....well maybe a few of the things might sound familiar on some level.

From cruising the streets of Rapids to hanging out in our friend's garages and basements, getting high or drunk and listening to the music that defined our generation (The Eagles, The Outlaws, Thirty Eight Special, Firefall, Steve Miller Band, Fleetwood Mac, Toto, Led Zeppelin, Pure Prairie League just to name a few).
Then there was the local mall and taking over the game room and all the little restaurants.
Pretty much an everyday hangout after school was to be had at "The Gold Mine Game Arcade".

Parties deep in the woods below what were called "The Highlines" (the tall electrical towers that run through open fields) to hanging out at and summers spent camping under the stars at any number of local lakes surrounding the city.

My growing up years were a bit like that of the characters of "The Outsiders" mixed in with a sprinkling of the characters of  "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Mama's Family" and you know what????
I wouldn't trade those years for anything in the world.

Part Two

Meeting the Cousin I Didn't Know Was A Cousin

"A Chance Encounter with a Star"

Fast forward to about 11 years after high school graduation.
December of 1995.....
I was working for the Marcus Corporation as a district manager of a chain of family restaurants called Marc's Big Boys and had just moved from Minneapolis to Milwaukee.

I had taken off a few days just before Christmas to make one of my many trips back home to Wisconsin Rapids to be with my family over the holidays.
I was staying at The Mead Inn and had my usual suite on the fifth floor that I always stayed in when I came to visit.

The Lobby of the Hotel Mead I Wisconsin Rapids, Wisc

I decided to head down to the pool area to swim and soak in the hot tub the evening that I arrived.
So here I was relaxing after a long drive in the jacuzzi and reading a book and I struck up a conversation with a guy sitting next to me with a ball cap lowered down so far on his head that I  couldn't see his eyes.

He kept raising his leg out of the water and I casually asked him if he had a skiing mishap or a fall on the ice. He responded that he had just had minor knee surgery a few days before to repair some torn ligaments.

A few minutes later and I realized who he was.
He raised his finger to his lips and mouthed a quiet "You never saw me here".
So here I am sitting in a tub of 102 degree bubbling water talking with Patrick Wayne Swayze.
A surreal experience to say the least.

Cousin Patrick Swayze circa 1995

He went on to tell me he had flown into town the day before in his private plane for minor knee surgery.
His longtime orthopedic doctor had recently moved to Rapids from California.
We chatted for close to an hour about a little of everything but the main conversation centered on how I told him that the movie "The Outsiders" that he starred in was one of my favorites because I could relate to so many of the characters I relation to my teen years growing up in the Rapids.

The conversation with him was one of the cooler things that has happened to me in my life.
After about an hour he said he had to hit the sack as he had to fly out back to California early in the morning to be home for the holidays to be with his wife.
I remember him saying that they were then going to fly to Colorado for Christmas and he was kind of bummed because he couldn't ski because of his knee surgery.

We parted ways and I headed back to my room and he headed to his.
Funny coincidence is that we were on the same floor.
I found out the day I checked out that we were the only two on the entire 5th floor on the night that he had stayed there.
The front desk guest service agent told me that they had closed the floor off to the general public but because I worked for the company that owned the hotel (The Marcus Corp) and because I always stayed in the same room each time I visited that the manager had decided to leave me be.
Hows that for almost being a VIP!!??

Part Three

Our Family Connections (Mutual Pedigrees)

Following are two family lines that show that most of the human race is connected in some way if one goes back far enough and one can show their connections to the recorded ancestry of a few of the lucky human beings who have inhabited the earth since the beginning of time.

A few years ago I discovered a branch of my family tree from one of my mom's lines that led back to Colonial New England and then to England.

This family line has led to many neat discoveries and every day that I research I find more family connections to people from every possible walk of life.
During one one of my searches I found the following line that connected me with Patrick.

One of the family surnames that we share is that of the name of Eyre/Ayer. The family from which we both descend is of ancient English stock dating back to the Norman conquest and beyond.

(Further down I will lay out another line I discovered which connects Patrick and I via our  shared Stewart surname that goes back to the Royal Scottish Stewart Family).

The Eyre Family Coat of Arms

Historical background of the Eyre/Ayers Name

(From Wikipedia article on the Eyre surname)
Unlike other American political families such as the Adamses, the Lees, and, later, the Bushes and the Kennedys, the Eyres were members of an established noble house and had no social or economic incentive to leave England. Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania reports that George Eyre, founder of the dynasty in the United States, was the great-grandson of arch-royalist Gervaise Eyre, who served as governor of Newark Castle during the English Civil War, auctioned off one of his personal estates to provide loans to King Charles I, and eventually died defending the Crown.

The family had been of significant repute in England since at least 1066, with the semi-mythical account of their line's founding during the Battle of Hastings evolving into a national legend.
Some sources trace the family's origin even further, linking them to King Ethelred II through the Neville line (Gervaise's grandfather having wed Mary Neville).

One of the Eyres' palaces was Hope, which, historian Hamilton Hume notes in The Life of Edward John Eyre, Late Governor of Jamaica, "continued in the family until the period of the Civil Wars, when the then head of the family, Sir Gervas Eyre, Governor of Newark Castle, sold it to raise the last loan ever contracted for King Charles the First."

Hume writes that at the time of George Eyre's birth in 1700 the Eyres "were for centuries a powerful family...and [lords] of thirty manors...in Derbyshire and Sheffield."

Patrick and I descend from a branch of the Eyre family that goes back at least to the year 1200 with a 21st Great Grandfather named Humphrey Le Heyr who was a contemporary of the then King of England:
"In the elaborate history of the great family of Eyre of Wiltshrie given in Hoare's MODERN WILTS, the earliest mention is Humphrey Le Heyr, of Bromham, Wilts, who went with King Richard I to the Holy Land. His wife, Gillicia, made a grant of land to her younger son, Nicholas le Heyr. This grant and the confirmation are quoted in the visitations of Wiltshire."

*During the research into my Eyre famuily line I also discovered that I am descended from the branch of the Eyre family of Derbyshire England which gives me an 18th great grandfather named Sir Robert Eyre (1396-1459) who was a steward to John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury (who I discovered was my 18th great uncle...his sister Mary Talbot Green was my 17th Great Grandmother in this line and an 18th Great Grandmother in another line) and who's family has quite the English history.
A little of the Eyre Derbyshire history can be read here;

Line One

The First of two lines (being 15th cousins)

The common ancestor that Patrick and I and my siblings share in this line is a couple by the name of William Eyre (1434-1500) and Julianna Cockerel (1444-1503) who lived their lives in a small village in England named Wedhampton.
William and Julianna were my 15th Great Grandparents and were Patrick's 13th Great Grandparents.

I would descend from their son William Eyre (who would be my 14th Great Grandfather) and Patrick from his brother John Eyre (who would be his 12th Great Grandfather).

Patrick Wayne and John Joseph are 15th cousins once removed.

Patrick Wayne Swayze and John Joseph Repinski are descendents of William Eyre and Julianna Cockerel

The Royal Stewart Family Connection

About a year later after finding the line above, I would find another line that connected me with him as a cousin again, albeit a bit further apart but with a very neat (Royal) set of common ancestral great grandparents.

Lady Elizabeth Mure Stewart-my 20th and Patrick's 19th Great Grandmother
King Robert II of Scotland-my 20th and Patrick's 19th Great Grandfather

Line Two

The second line (being 20th cousins)

In this line we share common ancestors named Robert Stewart (1316-1390) &  Elizabeth O'Rowallan-Mure Stewart  (1320-1355) of Scotland.
Robert and Elizabeth were my 20th great Grandparents and were Patrick's 19th great grandparents.

Robert Stewart was a king of Scotland and was known as Robert the II.

I descend from their son John who in history would be knows as King Robert III  king of Scotland. He married Amelia Drummond.
John and Amelia were my 19th Great Grandparents.

Patrick descended from their daughter Margaret who was titled Princess Margaret of Scotland.
She married John Mac Donald, Lord of the Isles.
Margaret and John were Patrick's 18th Great Grandparents.

This makes Robert II the 19th great grandfather of Patrick Wayne.

Patrick's line broke off from mine with Robert and Elizabeth's daughter Margaret marrying John MacDonald..aka..John "Lord of the Isles, Lord of Islay" Macdonald aka de Yle.

1. John is the son of Marlene Grace (Dietz) Repinski

22. Robert III is the son of Robert Stewart
This makes Robert II the 20th great grandfather of John.

My family line broke off with Patrick's after Robert and Elizabeth with their son John (King Robert III) and his wife Anabella Drummond.

So I found it kind of neat that first off, Patrick and I and my siblings are related to one another, but to find that the connections between us go back to us both having some rather neat Scottish noble and royal blood is very darn neat.

Part Four

Life Sketch of my Cousin

(From Wikipedia: numbers after sentences are wikipedia source markers and entries in italic are made by me)

Patrick Wayne Swayze (/ˈsweɪzi/; August 18, 1952 – September 14, 2009) was an American actor, dancer, singer, and songwriter. Gaining fame with appearances in films during the 1980s, he became popular for playing tough guys and romantic lead males, giving him a wide fan base with female audiences and a status as a sex symbol. He was named by People magazine as its Sexiest Man Alive in 1991.

During his career, Swayze received three Golden Globe Award nominations, for Dirty Dancing (1987), Ghost (1990), and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995). He wrote and recorded the popular song "She's Like the Wind", and was posthumously awarded the Rolex Dance Award in 2009.

Early life & Ancestry

Patrick Wayne Swayze was born on August 18, 1952 in Houston, Texas, the second child of Patsy Swayze (née Karnes; 1927–2013), a choreographer, dance instructor, and dancer, and Jesse Wayne Swayze (1925–1982), an engineering draftsman.[1][2] He had an older sister, Vickie (1949–1994), two younger brothers, actor Don (born 1958) and Sean (born 1962), and one younger sister, Bambi.[3]

Swayze's direct paternal ancestor was Englishman John Swasey (1619-1706) from Bridport in Dorset.
During the great migration, Swasey travelled aboard The Recovery arriving at Massachusetts. He married Katherine Kinge from Essex eventually having seven children.

Patrick's ancestral great grandfather who immigrated to America:
John Swasey (1619-1706)

The grandson Samuel was among the first to use the Swayze spelling.[4]

Until age 20, Swayze lived in the Oak Forest neighborhood of Houston, where he attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School,[5] Oak Forest Elementary School,[6] Black Middle School,[6][7] and Waltrip High School.[6] During this time, he pursued multiple artistic and athletic skills, such as ice skating, classical ballet, and acting in school plays. He also played football during high school, hoping to receive a football scholarship for college until a knee injury ended his career, and also concurrently practiced martial arts such as Wushu, Taekwondo and Aikido, which he used to channel his "self-deprecating rage".[8] In 1972, he moved to New York City to complete his formal dance training at the Harkness Ballet and Joffrey Ballet schools.[9]

Career

Patrick Swayze's first professional appearance was as a dancer for the Disney Theatrical Group in a show called Disney on Parade. He then starred in the role of Danny Zuko in one of the replacement casts for the long-running Broadway production of Grease[10] In 1979, he made his film debut as "Ace" in Skatetown, U.S.A..
He appeared in the poignant M*A*S*H episode Blood Brothers in 1981 as Private Sturgis, whose wounds are minor, but which lead to the discovery that he is fatally ill.[11] That same year he appeared in the TV movie Return of the Rebels with Barbara Eden, and then had a brief stint in 1983 on a short-lived TV series The Renegades, playing a gang leader named Bandit.

Swayze became better known to the film industry after appearing in The Outsiders in 1983 as the older brother of C. Thomas Howell and Rob Lowe.
The Outsiders

The same year, Swayze played a U.S.M.C. trainer in Vietnam rescue film Uncommon Valor with Gene Hackman. The following year, Swayze, Howell, and Howell's friend Darren Dalton reunited in Red Dawn, along with Jennifer Grey. In 1986, Lowe and Swayze reunited in Youngblood. Swayze's first major dramatic success was in the 1985 television miniseries North and South, set during the American Civil War.[12]

However, Swayze is probably best remembered for what was actually a low-budget movie, planned for only a one-week release, after which it was to go to video. Instead, Dirty Dancing propelled him to fame in 1987 playing resort dance instructor Johnny Castle, alongside his Red Dawn co-star Jennifer Grey. The story enabled Swayze to dance and romance Grey as well as showcasing his professional dance training. In addition to acting and dancing, Swayze co-composed and sang one of the songs on the soundtrack for Dirty Dancing, "She's Like the Wind". The song became a top-10 hit that has been covered by other artists since. Swayze had originally co-written the song with Stacy Widelitz for the film Grandview, U.S.A. in 1984.

Dirty Dancing's coming of age story first became a surprise hit, and then achieved enormous international success. It was the first film to sell one million copies on video, and as of 2009, it had earned over $214 million worldwide. The film also generated several alternative, or derivative versions, ranging from a television series to stage productions to a computer game. Swayze received a Golden Globe Award nomination for the role. The film was re-released briefly in 1997 for its ten-year anniversary.
Patrick & Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing

After Dirty Dancing, Swayze found himself in great demand, and appeared in several films, including Road House in 1989 with Sam Elliott, Ben Gazzara and Kelly Lynch. His next big role came when he starred in Ghost (1990) with Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg.[13] In 1991, he starred alongside Youngblood castmate Keanu Reeves in another major action hit, Point Break, and he was also chosen that year by People magazine as that year's "Sexiest Man Alive".[14]

Sexiest Man Alive

In 2003, Swayze co-produced and also starred in the fictional dance film One Last Dance, along with his real-life wife Lisa Niemi and a talented cast. The story revolves around an actual dance production, "Without a Word", which had been choreographed by Alonzo King, and Swayze and Niemi had also produced the film, starred in it, and composed some of the music composed by Swayze and Niemi.

For his contributions to the film industry, Swayze was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1997.[15]

Swayze was seriously injured in May 1997 while filming HBO's Letters from a Killer near Ione, California, when he fell from a horse and hit a tree.[16] Both of his legs were broken, and he suffered four detached tendons in his shoulder. Filming was suspended for two months. The film aired in 1998, and Swayze slowly recovered from his injuries, but he had trouble resuming his career until 2000, when he co-starred in Forever Lulu, with Melanie Griffith.

In 2001, he appeared in Donnie Darko, where he played a famous motivational speaker revealed to be a closeted pedophile. In 2002, he co-starred with Billy Bob Thornton and Charlize Theron in Waking Up in Reno, which focuses on two redneck couples taking a road trip from Little Rock to Reno to see a monster truck rally. In 2004, he played Allan Quatermain in King Solomon's Mines and had a cameo appearance in the Dirty Dancing prequel Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights as an unnamed dance instructor.

Swayze made his debut in London's West End in the musical Guys and Dolls as Nathan Detroit on July 27, 2006,[17][18][19] alongside Neil Jerzak, and remained in the role until November 25, 2006. His previous appearances on the Broadway stage had included productions of Goodtime Charley in 1975[20] and Chicago.[21]

Swayze also provided the voice for Cash the country music band dog in The Fox and the Hound 2 (2006), and in 2007 he starred in the film Christmas in Wonderland. Swayze played an aging rock star in Powder Blue (2008), co-starring his younger brother Don in their first film together.

In his final role, Swayze starred as FBI Agent Charles Barker in the A&E FBI drama The Beast,[22] which was filmed in Chicago.[23] Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer shortly after filming the pilot episode of The Beast, but continued working on the show while receiving treatment. The Beast premiered on January 15, 2009 and ran for one season. Reviewer Alan Sepinwall wrote:

[When] you watch Swayze in The Beast, [you] realize that this is the best performance of his career—that the opportunity to play a part like this, and to play it as well as he is, may be fueling his ability to keep fighting against the cancer. And you realize, in an odd silver lining, that the cancer may, in turn, be fueling the performance.[24]

Personal life

Swayze and his wife, Lisa Niemi, at the 1990 Grammy Awards.

Swayze was married to Lisa Niemi for 34 years from June 12, 1975 until his death, and they had no children. They met in 1970 when Swayze was 18 years old. Niemi, 14 years old at the time, was taking dance lessons from Swayze's mother.[25] In a 2008 interview, Swayze stated that Niemi was the inspiration for his hit song, "She's Like the Wind" (1987).

In 1989, Swayze said, "I've always felt there was something different in there (my personality), but I was scared to look. For I fear I wouldn't find anything. That's the reason I got into Buddhism, took EST training, was into therapy, into Scientology, into Transcendental Meditation. I was trying to support that side of myself. But, you know, in Texas there isn't much support for that part of you."[26] He also had said he was interested in and loved looking into different [religious] belief systems and faith[s], how it matters to other people, and how these various religious teachings are important to him in his world.[27]

Swayze entered rehab treatment for alcoholism in the 1990s. After an initial recovery, he temporarily withdrew from show business, retreating to his ranches in California and Las Vegas, New Mexico, to breed Arabian horses. His best-known horse was Tammen, a chestnut Arabian stallion.[28]

Swayze, who was an FAA licensed pilot with an instrument rating, made the news on June 1, 2000, while flying with his dogs in his twin-engine Cessna 414 N414PS, from Van Nuys, California, to Las Vegas, New Mexico. His plane developed a pressurization problem, causing Swayze to make a precautionary landing on a dirt road in a housing complex in Prescott Valley, Arizona. The plane's right wing struck a light pole, but Swayze was unharmed. According to the police report, witnesses said that Swayze appeared to be extremely intoxicated and asked for help to remove evidence from the crash site (an open bottle of wine and a 30-pack of beer).[29] He made himself unavailable to police for several hours. It was later determined that the alcohol in question was not in the cabin but stored in external storage compartments inaccessible in flight, and the probable cause of the accident was Swayze's physical impairment due to the cumulative effects of carbon monoxide from engine exhaust by-products, carbon monoxide from heavy tobacco use, and the loss of an undetermined amount of cabin pressurization, resulting in hypoxia.[30]

Illness and death

Wikinews has related news: American actor Patrick Swayze dies at age 57
In late December 2007, just after filming the pilot episode for The Beast, Swayze began to suffer a burning feeling in his stomach caused by a blockage of his bile ducts.[31] Three weeks later, in mid-January 2008, he was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. He traveled to the Stanford University Medical Center for chemotherapy and treatment with the experimental drug vatalanib which doctors hoped would cut off the blood supply to the tumor.[32]

On March 5, 2008, a Reuters article reported that Swayze "has a very limited amount of disease, and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far."[33] Swayze's doctor confirmed that the actor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but insisted he was not as close to death as reports suggested. Despite repeated tabloid claims that his death was imminent, Swayze continued to actively pursue his career.[34]

In early May 2008, it was widely reported in a number of tabloids that Swayze underwent surgery to remove part of his stomach after the cancer spread. Reports also stated that he rewrote his will, transferring his property to his wife.[35][36] In a statement made on May 28, Swayze said he continued to respond well to treatment at Stanford University Medical Center.
In late May 2008, he was seen at a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game, his first public appearance since his diagnosis.[37]

In late July 2008, six months after reportedly being given just weeks to live by medical experts, a seemingly healthy Swayze was asked by a reporter in a Los Angeles airport about his health. He replied, "I'm cooking. I'm a miracle, dude. I don't know why." The previous month, he reportedly said, "My treatments are working and I am winning the battle."[38][39]

Swayze appeared on the ABC, NBC, and CBS simulcast of Stand Up to Cancer in September 2008, to appeal to the general public for donations for the initiative. Swayze said to a standing ovation, "I dream that the word 'cure' will no longer be followed by the words 'it's impossible'. Together, we can make a world where cancer no longer means living with fear, without hope, or worse."[40]

After the show ended, Swayze remained onstage and talked to other cancer patients; executive producer Laura Ziskin (herself battling advanced breast cancer, which would claim her own life) said, "He said a beautiful thing: 'I'm just an individual living with cancer'. That's how he wants to be thought of. He's in a fight, but he's a fighter."[40][41] On December 2, 2008, Swayze denied claims made by tabloids that the cancer had spread to his liver.[42]

In an interview with Barbara Walters which aired in January 2009, Swayze admitted that he had a "tiny little mass" in his liver, but told Walters that he wanted the media to report that he was "kicking it". When Walters asked him if he was using any holistic or alternative methods of treatment besides chemotherapy, Swayze said he was using some Chinese herbs. He then voiced his opposition to the unsupported claims made by proponents of alternative therapies.[43]

Patrick's Final Interview with Barbara Walters

On January 9, 2009, Swayze was hospitalized with pneumonia. The pneumonia was said to be a complication of chemotherapy for Swayze's cancer.[44]
On January 16, he was released from the hospital to rest at home with his wife.[45] On April 19, 2009, doctors informed Swayze that the cancer had again metastasized to his liver.[46] Swayze had been a heavy smoker for forty years, and he once admitted to smoking 60 cigarettes a day.[47] He stated that his chain smoking probably "had something to do with" the development of his disease. Photos taken of a gaunt Swayze in the months before his death showed him continuing to smoke.[48][49]

Swayze died, with family at his side, on September 14, 2009, at the age of 57. Swayze's death occurred 20 months after his cancer diagnosis.[50][51][52] Swayze's publicist confirmed to CNN that he had died of pancreatic cancer.[53] His body was cremated, and his ashes were scattered over his New Mexico ranch.

In popular culture

In 2009, pop musician Jon Lindsay directly referenced both Swayze and the film Red Dawn in the song "Red Dawn Soon" from his Magic Winter & The Dirty South EP.[54]

Swayze's name has become a commonly used term in hip hop songs.[55] Lyrics will use the phrase "...and I'm Swayze", meaning that the speaker has become "like a ghost", meaning he disappeared or is otherwise gone.[56] This is a reference to the title character of Swayze's film Ghost (1990). It began in the early 1990s, by rappers such as EPMD, Black Sheep, and CL Smooth. The use of Swayze's name has continued to be used by such rappers as The Notorious B.I.G. in 2Pac's song "Runnin' (Dying to Live)", Sir Mix-a-Lot in "Swap Meet Louie", Chali 2na in "So Crazy", Method Man, Aesop Rock, Mistah F.A.B.'s "Ghost Ride It", Bad Meets Evil's "Fast Lane", Denzel Curry, and in Mobb Deep's song "The Start of Your Ending (41st Side)", as well as Frank Ocean's song “Swim Good”. Swayze himself appeared in the music video for Ja Rule's song "Murder Reigns".[57] The most recent usage of Swayze's name is in the Eminem diss "Killshot".

In the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode featuring the film Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, the character Crow T. Robot writes a Christmas carol centered around Swayze's movie Road House titled "Let's Have a Patrick Swayze Christmas".[58]
