Henry Alan Pope-2nd Great Grandfather

We all have 16 second great grandparents. Without those 16 souls, we would not exist.

Today is the birthday of one of those 2nd great grandfathers that was responsible for part of myself and my siblings and their children through our mother, Marlene Deitz Repinski.

It is through Henry and his daughter Grace's (my great grandmother) lines that I discovered my family ancestry to my 11th Great Grandfathers Isaac Allerton and Richard Warren who traveled to across the vast Atlantic Ocean from England to North America in the year 1620 on the famous Mayflower and who helped lay the foundation for what would one day become the United States of America.

Henry Allen Pope would have been 157 years old today.
Happy 157th Birthday Grandpa.

A brief sketch of the life of my 2nd Great Grandfather, Henry Allen Pope and his parents and his descendants follows:

Henry Allen Pope-2nd Great Grandfather

(1862-1927)

My 2nd great grandfather was born on July 15th, 1862 in Hartford Vermont.

Henry's Ancestry back to Plymouth Colony Mass.

Henry was the son of Thomas Paschal Pope and Elizabeth Cave.

Henry was an 8th generation descendant of one of the original settlers of Plymouth Colony in what is now Mass.

Henry is also descended from numerous Mayflower Pilgrims including Isaac and Mary Norris Allerton and their daughter Mary Allerton Cushman and Richard Warren.

Thomas Pope (1608-1683)

His 5th Great Grandfather (and my 9th & 10th Great Grandfather) was a man by the name of Thomas Pope.

Thomas Pope immigrated to America in about 1632 and settled in Plymouth Colony.
 Many sources say he came on the "Mary & John" and others say he was on one of the many ships that sailed with the Winthrop Fleet in what was called "The Great Migration".
Shortly after arriving in Plymouth, Thomas was given a land allotment and was admitted as a "freeman" to the town.
He proved to be a valuable member of the fledgling community and by all accounts was well liked by his brethren.

Thomas was married two times and had a total of eight children.
{Through chance and a weird mix of intermarrying, I discovered that I am descended from three of his children.}

Family One:

Thomas Pope married (1) Anne Fallowell on July 28, 1637, in Plymouth and had one daughter.
Anne died before May 29, 1646.

Child of Thomas and Anne Pope:

"Hannah Pope Barlett"
Hannah was born about 1639. She married Joseph Bartlett by 1663 and ha eight eight children. She died on March 12 , 1710. He died on February 18, 1711/2, in Plymouth.

It is also from this line from my 9th great grandfather, Joseph Bartlett that Henry and I descend from our 1st Mayflower Pilgrim.
Joseph's mother was Mary Warren Bartlett and Mary's father was Richard Warren who came to America on the Mayflower.
Richard Warren was my 11th Great Grandfather in this line.

{Hannah was one of three of the children of Thomas Pope who would be one of my 9th ancestral great grandmothers.
This would be through the line from her daughter Sarah Bartlett who married Elisha Holmes.
Sarah Bartlett Holmes and Elisha Holmes would then have a son named Jabez Holmes who would marry Sarah Clark.
Jabez Holmes and Sarah Clark Holmes would have a daughter named Mary Holmes who would marry Faunce Hammond.
 Mary Holmes Hammond and Faunce Hammond would have a daughter named Ruth Hammond.

And Four generations after Hannah Pope Bartlett, my 5th great grandmother, Ruth Hammond (who was Hanah Pope Bartlett's great great granddaughter) would marry my 5th great grandfather, Mitchell Pope, who was the great grandson of Hannah's brother Isaac!
I often wonder if either of them knew of their relationship to one another!!}

Family Two:

Thomas Pope married (2) Sarah Jenny on May 29, 1646, in Plymouth and had seven children. Sarah died by July 9, 1683.

Children of Thomas and Sarah Pope;

"Susana Pope Mitchell"
Susanna was born about 1647. She married Jacob Mitchell on November 7, 1666, in Plymouth and had three children.They were both killed in June 1675 during King Philip’s War.

Susanna would be the second of three of the children of Thomas Pope who would be one of my 9th ancestral great grandmothers.
Susanna and Jacob had a son named Jacob who married as his 2nd wife, Rebecca Cushman.

It is from this line that Henry and I descend from my 2nd & 3rd and 4th Mayflower Pilgrims!
Rebecca's father was Isaac Cushman.
Isaac Cushman's mother was Mary Allerton Cushman.
Mary Allerton Cushman's parents were Isaac Allerton and Mary Norris Allerton who all came to America on the Mayflower.
In this line Mary Allerton Cushman was my 10th great grandmother and Issac and Mary Norris Allerton were my 11th great grandparents.}

This is also one of those convoluted lines like the one above as two Pope cousins would thus again intersect in marriage a few generations apart.

The line goes as such:
Susanna Pope Mitchell and Jacob Mitchell Senior had a son named Jacob Mitchell Junior.
Jacob Mitchell Junior married as his second wife, Rebecca Cushman.
Jacob Mitchell Junior and Rebecca Cushman Mitchell would then have a daughter named Rebecca Mitchell.
Rebecca Mitchell would marry Elnathan Pope.

*Elnathan Pope was the son of Isaac Pope who was the sister of Susanna Pope Mitchell who's father was Thomas Pope.
*Rebecca Mitchell Pope was the daughter of Jacob Mitchel who was the son of Susanna Pope Mitchell.

Thus Rebecca Mitchell Pope's grandmother and Elnathan Pope's father were siblings making Rebecca and Elnathan 1st cousins 2 times removed.
This line would then go to their son, another Elnathan Pope who would then have a son named Mitchell Pope.

"Seth Pope"
Seth was born on January 13, 1648/9, in Plymouth. He married (1) Deborah Perry by 1675 and had nine children. She died on February 10, 1710/11. He married (2) Rebecca _____. He died on March 17, 1726/7, in Dartmouth. She was buried in Dartmouth on January 25, 1741.

"Thomas Pope Junior"
Thomas was born on March 25, 1651, in Plymouth.There is no further record.

"John Pope"
John was born on March 15, 1652/3, in Plymouth. He died in July 1675.
John was killed along with his sister Susanna and her husband Jacob Mitchell during the onset of King Phillip's War. They were all headed to a garrison that their father Thomas had went to a day before with Susanna and Jacob's children. The party was speared by Indians just as they approached the garrison. All three of them died of their wounds shortly after.

"Sarah Pope Hinkley"
Sarah was born about 1656. She married (1) Samuel Hinckley on November 13, 1676, and had five children. She married (2) Thomas Huckins on August 17, 1698, in Barnstable and had one daughter.

"Joanna Pope Hathaway"
Joanna was born about 1658. She married John Hathaway on March 5, 1682, in Dartmouth.

"Isaac Pope"
Isaac was born about 1664. He married Alice Freeman by 1687 and had seven children. She died about 1755.
Isaac was the third of the children of Thomas Pope who would be one of my 8th and 9th great grandfathers because of the above lines.

My direct line of descent from Isaac would be:
Isaac married Alice Freeman and they had a son named Elnathan.
Elnathan Pope married Rebecca Mitchel and they had a son named Elnathan.
Elnathan Pope Jr married Mary Thompson and they had a son named Mitchell.
Mitchell Pope married Ruth Hammond and they had a son named Thomas F.
Thomas F Pope married Eliza Converse and they had a son named Thomas P.
Thomas P Pope married Elizabeth Cave and they had a son named Henry.
Henry Pope, the subject of this post was my 2nd Great Grandfather.

Part Two

Henry's Life and His Descendants

Following is the sketch of his life from "Pioneer Popes", a genealogical book written by one of my distant cousins which outlines the history of my Pope ancestors and their descendants. The information in bold italic has been added by me.

Henry Allen Pope-2nd Great Grandfather

Henry Allen (8) Pope, the only son of Thomas Paschal (7) and Elizabeth Cave Pope, was born July 15, 1864, in Vermont.

**The numbers after the names indicate the generational number of decent from Thomas Pope of Plymouth Mass. who was the progenitor of this Pope family line in America. This line now numbers at least 250,000 descendants and possibly many more.

{The line going back from Thomas Paschal is as follows: Thomas Faunce Pope (6), Mitchell Pope (5), Elnathan Pope (4), Elnathan Pope (3), Isaac Pope (2), Thomas Pope (1)}

Henry came with his parents while still a small child to Wisconsin and lived on his father's farms, first in Farmington and later in Dayton not far from Belmont in Portage County.
He attended the country school in Dayton, adjoining the farm.

{I found these farmsteads a few years ago while exploring the Belomd and Dayton townships while home for a family reunion. One of the fremains of one of the farm houses and some barns and sheds can still be seen on land that is probably still owned my a Pope family member but that has reverted to its wild natural state.
I also found the country school which was a fine old brick building that is now a private home.}

Henry married first, Isadora Sofron Smith (born October 2, 1859, in the town of Belmont, Portage County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Moyes Smith) .

{Isadora Smith Pope was my 2nd great grandmother and Edward and Elizabeth would be my 3rd great grandparents.
There is a wonderful story about Edward and Elizabeth in a commemorative book on some of the pioneers of Wisconsin that I discovered a few years ago.
This book has helped me discover the ancestry of Isadora all the way back to Martha's Vineyard via her father Edward and to Scotland via her mother.}

A link to the post of Edward and Elizabeth:

The Children & Wives of Henry Allen Pope

One child, a daughter was born to Henry and Isadora.
1. Grace Elizabeth Pope, born February 2, 1891, in the town of Dayton, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.

{Grace Elizabeth Pope was my great grandmother.
Her middle name was taken from her grandmother Elizabeth Moyes Smith. Grace would go on to marry Henry Deitz and they would have my maternal grandfather, Raymond Deitz, who would be the father of my mother, Marlene Grace Deitz Repinski}

Isadora Smith Pope passed away March 3, 1906.

Henry Allen (8) Pope married, second, Elsie Alberts on November 16, 1908, in the town of Belmont, Portage County, Wisconsin.
Elsie was born August 27, 1891, at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

They had four children, all born in the town of Dayton.
1. George Thomas (9) Pope, born November 4, 1911, died May 26, 1922, age 11 years, 6 months, 22 days. He is buried in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
2. Kenneth Pope, born April 13, 1913. See Chapter X.
3. Alvin Pope, born November 20, 1919. See Chapter X.
4. Betty Jane Pope, born April 2, 1925.
{I am still researching my 2nd great uncles and aunts above but I have discovered that Kenneth settled in Michigan and Alvin and Betty Jane raised their families in the central Wisconsin area where they were born.}

 Grace Pope Deitz-Daughter of Henry Allen Pope

Great Grandmother

Back to my line that is written in the Pioneer Popes book which has my mother's name as the last entry. I cry every time I see this... as she never knew of her fantastic ancestry:

The Daughter of Henry Allen (8) Pope:
Grace Elizabeth Pope, the only child of Henry Allen (8) and Isadora Smith Pope, was born February 2, 1891, in the town of Dayton, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.
{My Great Grandmother}
She attended the rural school which was adjoining their farm.

She was married to Henry Deitz of Danbury, Burnett County, Wisconsin, on November 16, 1908, at her old home.
{My Great Grandfather}

{A bit more history of my Great Grandparents from the Pioneer Pope book}
Grace Pope Deitz  & Henry Deitz lived first in Danbury, Wisconsin.
They then returned to her father's farm where they stayed until after the birth of their first child, when the family moved to the city of Waupaca where they resided until the year of 1916.
Then they moved to Amherst Junc tion, Wisconsin, where they have since lived.
Mr. Deitz has worked on the Green Bay and Western Railroad for the past eighteen years.
Mrs. Deitz does practical nursing.
Her address is, Box 135, Amherst Junc tion, Wisconsin.

Henry Deitz and Grace Pope Deitz had four children:

1. Eleanor Elizabeth Deitz:
born August 31, 1909, on her grand father's farm.
She passed away on March 25, 1928, at the Deitz home in Amherst Junction at the age of 18 years.
{My Great Aunt Eleanor died before I was born but I do remember my grandfather and my Great Aunt Marion talking about her. They both said she was a beautiful young lady. I remember Great Aunt Marion saying that she got sick with the Flu and languished for close to two weeks before she died. May she rest in peace.}

2. Raymond Harold Deitz:
born July 23, 1912, in the city of Waupaca.
He was married in Stevens Point to Maude Kosmeder of Stevens Point, on August 17, 1935.
{My Grandparents}
They have one child, Mar- lene Grace Deitz, born July 9, 1936, at Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
{My Mother}

They are now living at 721% Portage Street, Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
Mr. Deitz is a sheet metal roofer by trade.

Raymond and Maud would have one more child after my mother. My uncle Clyde Deitz would be my mom's only brother.
He would marry my Aunt Jan and they would have three boys:
Jay, Scott and Jeff.

My mom would have one child named Terry with her first husband, Orville Josie and then would have a daughter named Jane and then she would marry my dad, Maurice Repinski and they would have four children:
Myself (John), James, Jacklyn and Jeffry.

3. Marion Frances Deitz:
born November 30, 1914, in the city of Waupaca. She was married to Edwin Mausavage of Custer, Wisconsin, at the Deitz home in Amherst Junction, Wisconsin, on June 21, 1935. She is living at Custer, where her husband has a garage, filling station and restaurant.
{A little about My Great Aunt Marion..... I have many fond memories of her. She was my mom's favorite aunt by all measures and we would visit her and Great Uncle Eddie often on their farm in Custer, Wisconsin.
I always looked forward to our visits to this wonderful country home. The warmth and simplicity of this home was simply amazing to me.
In the kitchen their was a woodturning potbelly wood cooking stove which always had a big pot of coffee on. And the pies and pastries that came out of that old wood oven were to die for. Dinner was a special treat with gigantic Egg Dumplings, Boiled Chicken on some days and hearty goulash on another. There was always plenty to eat and we never went away hungry.
The farm house had an inside bathroom but it was not used. The outhouse which was about fifty feet from the back door was where we "did our business". I always thought this odd and from what I can remember, the "modern bathroom" was a room they didn't use. I don't recall the reason. I know my mom told me at one point but it escapes my memory right now.
Great Aunt Marion and Great Uncle Eddie were Jehovah's Witnesses and as such they had some pretty strange (to me at least) rituals and rules that they lived by. I remember one was something about hospitals and blood transfusions. Something in my memory I recall was where one of the family was sick and in the hospital and almost died because of their religion not allowing blood transfusions from others.
Suffice to say that the narritive about the above woman has strayed off of the path of my 2nd great grandfather so I shall end this part with the fact that of all the relatives I got to know in my childhood, My Great Aunt Marion was one of my favorites. She was an "old soul" and showed it in everything she did and said.
Looking back on knowing her, She is probably as close to the image of my great grandmother Grace (her mother) that I will ever get..for that I am so thankful.}

Marion and Eddie had three children.
Janet, Linda and Sandy.
Their daughter Janet was a little younger than my mom but close enough in age where they spent a lot of time together as they were growing up. The town where my mom grew up, Amherst Junction, was only about 10 miles from the town were Janet grew up, Custer.
More on this family line in another post down the road.

4.  Henry Clifford Deitz:
born August 15, 1917, at Amherst Junc tion, Wisconsin. He is unmarried and lives at home. He is engaged in the metal roofing business.

{Great Uncle Henry later married and lived in New London Wisconsin. I don't remember him very well but I do recall visiting them in New London when mom and dad would take us on weekend trips to see her relatives.
About a year ago I came upon an obituary for Henry Dietz of Green Bay Wisconsin who was the son of Henry and Elsie Dietz of New London Wisconsin. This was the son of the above Henry Deitz who was one of my great uncles.}

The Death of Henry Allen Pope

Henry Allen (8) Pope passed away at a hospital in Appleton on April 30, 1927, after a lingering illness of nearly two years caused by a cancer of the stomach.

He was a kind husband and father and was very well liked by his many friends and neighbors. Henry and his father owned a threshing machine and for more than thirty years he went out threshing every fall, in addition to his farming.

He is buried in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in the town of Dayton in Waupaca County, Wisconsin.

I haven't been able to find any photos of what my 2nd great grandfather Henry might have looked like but I am still searching. I did find his grave in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery a few years ago while I was back home researching.

I can imagine what he may have looked like though after finding a photo of one of his cousins that lived in the area.

Cousin Paul (Pep) Pope of Lind-Waupaca Wisconsin (1925-2105)

Happy 157th Birthday Henry Allen Pope!

You are not forgotten.
With everlasting love, your 2nd great grandson
John
