Princess Elisabeth Alexandra Luise Alice "Holy Martyr Yelizaveta Fyodorovna" Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov formerly Hessen-Darmstadt aka Feodorovna, Romanova
Introduction
As I am researching our family ancestry I came upon a woman who's life was both amazing and so sad and who's existence was intertwined with the Russian attrocities of the early 20th century that resulted in the killing of much of her extended family members of the house of Romanov.
Reading about the life of this woman brought tears to my eyes. She lived a life that most people would have died for...and she did.
Born into one of the oldest royal families of Europe, her upbringing would surly have been one of opulance and comfort. Through her mother, she was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England.
Princess Elizabeth (Ella) of Hesse-Darmstadt would be our 11 cousin 4 times removed from one of our mother's (Marlene Deitz Repinski) family lines from our great grandmother, Grace Pope Deitz' bloodline.
Life Sketch of Elizabeth Hesse-Darmstadt Feodornovna-Romanova
Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia (born Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine; 1 November 1864 – 18 July 1918) was a German Hessian and Rhenish princess of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt, and the wife of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia, the fifth son of Emperor Alexander II of Russia and Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine.
A granddaughter of Queen Victoria and an older sister of Alexandra, the last Russian Empress, Elisabeth became famous in Russian society for her dignified beauty and charitable works among the poor.
After the Socialist Revolutionary Party's Combat Organization assassinated her husband with a bomb in 1905, Elisabeth publicly forgave Sergei's murderer, Ivan Kalyayev, and campaigned without success for him to be pardoned.
She then departed the Imperial Court and became a nun, founding the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent dedicated to helping the downtrodden of Moscow.
In 1918, she was arrested and ultimately killed by Bolsheviks. In 1981, she was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, and in 1992 by the Moscow Patriarchate.
