Elizabeth Johnson Jr-"Salem Witchcraft" Ancestral Cousin Exonerated 300 years later

Yesterday as I was watching "The Kelly Clarkson Show" there was an interview with two high school girls and their teacher who undertook a class project in Civics to have one of the last accused people of the 1692 Salem Witchcraft Trials exonerated.

It seems that Elizabeth was accused but escaped execution after she pleaded guilty and helped to accuse others, including family members. Somehow (see below for theories) she got forgotten when the Mass. legislature exonerated most of the others that were accused.....

I then decided to research this woman and I found a very close family connection to her.

Read on for the tale of my 1st Cousin Elizabeth (Betty) Johnson Jr.

 Elizabeth (Betty) Johnson Jr

(1670-1732)

My First Cousin Nine Times Removed

More than 300 years ago, Elizabeth Johnson Jr. of the Massachusetts Bay Colony’s Andover settlement (in what is now North Andover) was accused of witchcraft.

Now, state Sen. Diana DiZoglio, D-Methuen, is hoping to officially clear Johnson’s name.

A 1711 law reversed convictions from the 1692 witchcraft trials, specifically naming 22 individuals. Lawmakers over the years have cleared the names of several others accused of witchcraft, and a bill before the Judiciary Committee would do the same for Elizabeth Johnson Jr. [Courtesy/Library of Congress]
The Massachusetts Legislature has taken steps to make amends for the 1692 witch trials and executions. Nineteen years after the trials, the colonial Legislature passed an act reversing the convictions of several who were executed.

And in 1957 the Legislature passed a resolution acknowledging the tragedy as "shocking, and the result of a wave of popular hysterical fear of the Devil in the community."

In 2001, Gov. Jane Swift signed a bill adding more names to those to be exonerated. ....

A Woman accused but not executed but not exonerated....

But one name was not on the list yet. Elizabeth Johnson Jr., born in 1670 to Steven and Elizabeth Dane Johnson, was accused of witchcraft — the first in her family — in August 1692 by members of the Carrier family.

Her mother would be arrested on similar accusations a few days later, and several more Johnson family members would follow.
It’s believed the Johnson family was targeted because Rev. Francis Dane, Elizabeth’s grandfather, was a longtime skeptic of witchcraft and opposed the witch trials.

After days of imprisonment and interrogation, Elizabeth Johnson Jr. eventually confessed and testified against others, including her own son. She was sentenced to death, but was spared execution by order of Gov. William Phips.

Now, DiZoglio wants to give Elizabeth Johnson Jr. the closure she’s had waiting for three centuries.

The Women responsible for clearing Elizabeth's name

(These women were on the Kelly Clarkson Show yesterday....)

Inspired by North Andover Middle School teacher Carrie LaPierre’s class, which researched the trials and exonerations, DiZoglio has filed a resolution to add Johnson’s name to the exoneration list, saying it’s likely that never happened because Johnson "was neither a wife or a mother, she was not considered worthy of having her name cleared."

Because Elizabeth was not hanged for her alleged crime, she was overlooked. Because she never had children, there is no group of descendants acting on her behalf," DiZoglio said in her testimony to the Legislature. "It's very important that we correct history and give the families of victims like Elizabeth closure.”
The 1692 witch trails are largely associated with Salem, but more people were actually accused in Andover than in Salem.

My Family Connection to Elizabeth

(1st cousins 9 times removed)

Elizabeth Johnson's Grandparent's John Johnson and Susan Tanner are John Repinski's 9th Great Grandparents

Elizabeth descends from their son Stephen Johnson and I and my siblings descend from their son William Johnson (Stephen's brother)

Elizabeth and John are first cousins 9 times removed

Elizabeth Johnson (1670-1716) and John Repinski are both descendants of Suzan (Unknown) Johnson (1611-1683).

1. Elizabeth is the daughter of Stephen Johnson (1636-1690)
2. Stephen is the son of Suzan (Unknown) Johnson (1611-1683)
This makes Suzan the grandmother of Elizabeth.

1. John is the son of Marlene Grace (Dietz) Repinski (1936-1999)
2. Marlene is the daughter of Raymond Harold Dietz (1912-1973)
3. Raymond is the son of Grace Elizabeth Mabel (Pope) Dietz (1891-1963)
4. Grace is the daughter of Henry Allen Pope (1862-1927)
5. Henry is the son of Thomas Paschal Pope (1838-1906)
6. Thomas is the son of Eliza Ann (Converse) Pope (abt.1819-1891)
7. Eliza is the daughter of Mary (Bugbee) Converse (1793-1880)
8. Mary is the daughter of Sarah (Johnson) Bugbee (1729-1815)
9. Sarah is the daughter of Caleb Johnson (1694-1760)
10. Caleb is the son of William Johnson (abt.1655-1727)
11. William is the son of Suzan (Unknown) Johnson (1611-1683)

Thomas Granger-The First Youth Executed in Colonial North America

 Thomas Granger

"The First Youth Executed in The New World"

Family Tree History Research and Reading

As I continue getting further into Nathanial Philbrick's rendering of Plymouth and New England  (and our Family's) history while reading his book "The Mayflower", I continue to be delighted by both stories and events I already knew about because of prior research and of new revelations which help me shed light on some of the other "family tree branches" and people and their histories and stories that I have been trying to learn about.

Today's interesting find starts on page 186 and has the story that two of our great grandfather's were a part of and that I had read about a few years ago after first discovering our moms family history back to the Mayflower.
Read on.......

 "Thomas and his Animals"

Thomas Granger Wikitree Profile

Philbrick starts the paragraph in the book by saying:
As the number of towns grew, the character of the colony inevitably began to change, and from the viewpoint of our 11th great uncle, William Bradford, it wasn't for the good.....

Even worse than the cases of premarital sex and adulterous behavior were, according to him, those of sodomy and buggery.

One such case of the later behaviors happened in the middle 1600s. In 1642, seventeen year old Thomas Granger, a servant to an "honest man of Duxbury", was convicted of having sexual relations with "a mare, a cow, two goats, five sheep, two calfs and a turkey.

In his "Of Plymouth Plantation" Journal, Bradford described the case of Thomas Granger, a teen-ager executed, in September 1642, for buggery with "a mare, a cow, two goats, five sheep, two calves and a turkey." Granger, and an individual who "had made some sodomitical attempts upon another," were questioned about "how they came first to the knowledge and practice of such wickedness."

The sodomitical individual "confessed he had long used it [the practice] in Old England." Granger "said he was taught it [bestiality] by another that had heard of such things from some in England when he was there, and they kept cattle together."
This indicated, Bradford said, "how one wicked person may infect the many." He therefore advised masters to take great care about "what servants they bring into their families."

Bradford and his fellow magistrates executed the boy on Sep 8, 1642 but not until he had witnessed the killing of his "animal paramours" which were all buried in a pit.

Thomas Granger being hung for "Beastiality" in 1642

Fast forward to the present time....

Starting in 2014, Students with the Archeology Department at the University of Mass. at Boston undertook excavations of what they thought to be the "original Plymouth Settlement of the Pilgrims".

"The project area is considered to have very
high archaeological sensitivity, and as we had
found in 2014, every shovel test pit and excava-
tion unit in 2015 recovered artifacts. Burial Hill
is already on the National Register of Historic
Places and is a complex and historically signifi-
cant cemetery (Berg and Friedberg 2012) covering
5.12 acres with at least 2269 gravestones from
1681 to 1957. "

While digging they came upon one pit that was dug into the ground and in that pit were remains of various animals with their skeletons found intact! Included in those skeletal remains were what seemed to be remains of a small horse, a cow, two goats, five sheep, two calfs and what seemed to be a large bird (a turkey perhaps?)

My Family Connections to Thomas Granger

So I will add to this story, my ancestral ditties:

1. The honest man of Duxbury ,who's servant was Thomas, was our 10th great grandfather Love Brewster.
I don't know why Philbrick didn't mention him by name.

2. The magistrates that Philbrick talks about is (other than Bradford) the executioner (the messenger/sheriff/marshal of Plymouth at the time) responsible for the hanging of Granger and that man was our 10th great grandfather John Holmes.
John served in the capacity of being in charge of Plymouth law enforcement at the time so it was his duty to hang the young man.

My Family Connection to young Thomas Granger of Plymouth

There is another story that I read somewhere a while ago that "young Thomas" was asked if he had any last words and he supposedly said "screw all your little lambs...I did"

Follow the links I have attached below to learn more about this story and the men attached to it who are

our ancestors...

Warm Regards,

My "Yankee-Scottish" Ancestral Great Grandmother- Izzy Smith Pope

 Isadore Smith Pope

2nd Great Grandmother

(1859-1906)

While looking back into the old Family Tree I often find ancestors who's life and ancestry's stick with me long after I have discovered them and read their stories. One of my 2nd Great Grandma's is one of these people. She died young as did alot of my ancestors on my mother's side and she would only know her daughter for a short while before she passed away.

Isadore Smith Pope had a short life but it seemed like a life of plenty and a life of love.

Meet Izzie Smith Pope.....

From this woman we get even more of our English blood and almost all of our Scottish DNA.
Our 2nd Great Grandmother (and 3rd Great Grandma to my nieces and nephews) was born 163 years ago in Belmont (Lafayette County) Wisconsin on October 2, 1859.

Her parents were Edward Y Smith and Elizabeth Moyes.
Edward and Elizabeth were married Dec. 2nd 1853 in the town of Lisbon (Waukesha County)and would have a total of 9 children including our Izzie.
Izzy was born when Edward was 26 and Elizabeth was 25.

Izzy was a pure bred British woman, her father Edward descending from Colonial New England stock from The original settlers of Martha’s Vineyard off of Cape Cod Mass. and her mother, Elizabeth Moyes, a Scottish immigrant, having sailed from the British Isles with her parents as a child.
She was raised on the family farm in Southeastern Wisconsin in Sussex with her 8 siblings.

Isadore would meet and marry Henry Pope in 1887 at the age of 25.

Henry also was descended from the original settlers of Colonial New England, having numerous ancestral great grandparents who were passengers on the famous Mayflower and who would later be called “The Plymouth First Comers” and later called “The Pilgrims”.

One of Henry's ancestors was a man named Thomas Pope. Much is written about Thomas in the history of New England and he was considered one of the original settlers of Dartmouth and Fairhaven Mass.

Izzie and Henry settled in the Waupaca Wis. area on part of what was called "The Pope homestead" where Henry engaged in farming with his father Thomas Paschal Pope and Thomas’ brothers and many cousins on the massive Pope family farmstead.

Izzie and Henry would have one child, our great grandmother, Grace Pope, in the year 1891, who would go on to marry our great grandfather Henry Dietz.

From Grace would come our grandfather, Raymond Dietz and then our mother, Marlene Grace Dietz Repinski.

Isadore Sofron Smith Pope died in March 3, 1906 at the age of 47 when Grace was 15 years old and 2 years later, Grace would get a stepmother when Henry remarried to a woman named Elsie Albertson.

Isadore Sofron Smith Pope is buried in the Pope family plot in Greenvale Cenetery in Brlmont, Portage County, Wisconsin.

Our Family Line To Isadore Smith Pope

Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer-10th Cousin

 September 30, 2022

Who Do We Think We Are

{Skeletons In My Closet}

Our Family History never ceases to amaze me. The further I dig into my Family Tree, the more interesting discoveries I make.

I just finished watching the netflix series "Monster-Jeffrey Dahmer" and yesterday as I was doing some research into one of my mom's colonial New England family lines, I discovered a family line that connects myself and my siblings and their children through my mother Marlene Deitz Repinski to one of the most infamous serial killers of the 20th Century.....

INTRODUCTION

Jeffrey Dahmer, also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, was an American serial killer and sex offender, who committed the rape, murder and dismemberment of 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. Many of his later murders also involved necrophilia, cannibalism and the permanent preservation of body parts—typically all or part of the skeletal structure.

Jeff being booked in Milwaukee County Jail

Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was born in 1960 in West Allis Wisconsin...

His parents were Lionel Dahmer and Joyce Flint. Jeff spent his childhood in Bath Ohio. It was in this community that he would commit his first killing, that of a young man who he picked up hitchiking when he was 18 years old.

Jeff's High School photo

From there, he would eventually continue his "killing sprees" in the Milwaukee area culminating in his arrest in 1991.

Many theories are put out there to try and explain how Jeff became the monster that he did and I wont go into any of that. Suffice to say, he committed some of the most incomprehensible acts known to human beings and he will forever be remembered as one of the most infamous serial killers in modern history.
