Amos Cave 5th Great Grandfather-Born December 6, 1801

Today would be the 219th Birthday of my 5th Great Grandfather, Amos Cave.

Introduction

I had a very hard time finding this ancestral great grandfather as he was a very big "Brick Wall" in the search for the father of my 4th great grandmother, Elizabeth Cave Pope.

Elizabeth was born in 1843 in Hartford Vermont. She married Thomas Paschal Pope in 1860. They were my 4th great grandparents through my mother's grandmother, Grace Pope Dietz.

As I was trying to discover who Elizabeth's parents were, I noticed that her maiden name of Cave was sometimes spelled Cove and Gove and Gave. This of course made the search for her parents a bit of a challange.

After many months of searching, I thought I had found her parents, one Edward Gove and Amelia Law. A few months later, a reader of one of my family history research posts, noted that the Elizabeth Gove, daughter of Edward and Amelia Gove was not the Elizabeth that was my 4th Great Grandmother. He suggested that her maiden name was "CAVE" and pointed me me to a man from Hartford Vermont by the name of AMOS CAVE.

Low and behold, that suggestion was right on and I thus discovered my 5th Great Grandparents, Amos Cave and Mary (Badger) Cave of Hartfort, Windsor Vermont. The location made perfect sense as Hartford was just a short distance from Woodstock, which was the birthplace of my 4th great grandfather, Thomas Paschal Pope.

Amos Cave-5th Great Grandfather

Origins

Amos was born in Middleton, Essex, Massachusetts.

His parents were Amos Cave and Betty Wilkins.  His father, Amos Senior was born in Middleton, Essex, Mass. in 1761 and his mother, Betty was born in Middleton, Essex Mass. in 1766

A snapshot showing the parents and grandparents of Amos and his wife Mary Badger:

Both Amos and Betty were descendants of some of the first settlers of Salem Mass. and as such both had ancestors that were involved in the infamous Witch Trials of the 1690s in that bewitched town on the coast of colonial New England.

(I shall endevor to write about the fascinating history of both Amos and Betty in a later post.)

Amos was one of five children of Amos and Betty. His siblings were John, Betsey, Solomon and another Betsey.

Marriage & Children

Amos would marry Mary Badger on
7 Mar 1839 in Hartford Vermont. I am not positive what Amos did for a living but I surmise he was a farmer in the Hartford area. I am still researching to try and find out more about his life and that of the Cave family that he descends from.

Amos and Mary would have six children during their marriage including my 4th great grandmother, Elizabeth. The children of Amos and Elizabeth and their dates of birth and death are as follows:

Death and Burial

According to the town of Hartford Vermont History Book, Amos died by "Suicide by drowning" on 22 March 1864. He is buried in "Center of Town Cemetery" in Hartford Vermont in row 6, far right, stone #44. Photo of his gravestone below:

Happy Birthday Great Grandpa Amos. You are not forgotten!
